GOOD NEIGHBORS On Demand
By Amy Slotnick
A serial killer in the city and a new neighbor in the building initiate the plot of thriller , GOOD NEIGHBORS. Set in Montreal in 1995, the film is lackluster and feels predictable; nevertheless it is semi entertaining.

Victor (Jay Baruchel) is new in town and moves into an old, French-style walk up apartment building, living directly above neighbors Louise (Emily Hampshire), a quirky waitress with too many cats, and Spencer (Scott Speedman), a wheel chair bound widower with a mischievous smile. The three apartments are connected by an exterior fire escape, adding an architectural spookiness as well as an alternate exit that is worked in nicely with the story’s plot.

Louise and Spencer are obsessed with the recent news stories about a serial killer who has murdered and raped several young women in the area, including a waitress from the restaurant where Louise works. Victor befriends them both and begins to walk Louise home at night, to prevent her from becoming another victim of the killer. For Victor though it is also a way to get closer to Louise with whom he has fallen almost suspiciously in love.

SEPTIEN
Challenging. Obtuse. Infuriating. The world of independent film is often all three at once. So it is with director Michael Tully's SEPTIEN, as undefinable and indescribable a horror film as one is likely to encounter all year. SEPTIEN tells the story of two brothers, Amos and Ezra, living together on a farm in the mountains. When their long-gone brother, Cornelius -- played by Tully -- returns home, the film swerves into a surreal trip that includes sports hustling, gas huffing, and the scary de-evolution of this backwoods clan.
Michael Tully / SEPTIEN (Sundance Selects)
Generating an air of menace from the first frame, Tully keeps the audience off-balance throughout what turns out to be a surprisingly conventional three-act structure. Ezra, vaguely feminine, seems more of a mother to his brothers than a sibling, cooking and obsessively scrubbing their rundown house. Amos spends his time painting macabre, sexually explicit works in the shed.
SEPTIEN (Sundance Selects)
And the nearly silent Cornelius plays tennis and basketball -- brilliantly -- against locals for money, even as he filches gas from nearby pumps and passes out in fume-induced euphoria in the woods. Clearly damaged, haunted by some long-ago happening, it's only a matter of time before the three brothers are offered an opportunity for redemption. Or is it revenge?

Movies On Demand Premiering This Week (July 8, 2011)
- SOURCE CODE
SOURCE CODE (Summit)
Another action film where the hero (Jake Gyllenhaal) can time travel (sort of, but for only 8 minute intervals) to find a mad bomber. Why do criminals prey upon public transportation (SPEED) in Hollywood movies? Leave commuters alone! I'm going to wager today's screen writers are not taking the bus or train to work. Can't someone write a screenplay about Porches & Ferraris as the target of mayhem?
Gyllenhaal seems like a movie star who will break the box office, but which of these films were you eager to watch since BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN (RENDITION, BROTHERS, LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS. PRINCE OF PERSIA did okay, but even with video game audience, didn't break $100 million). Maybe they didn't crush in theaters, but I'll give him credit for diverse film selections. And with that, I think the most interesting factoid of SOURCE CODE is that the film director, Duncan Jones, is David Bowie's son. The spawn of Ziggy Stardust must have some creative thoughts. We'll see what he does next, but for a slow week On Demand, Risk It.

Duncan Jones / SOURCE CODE (Summit)
Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan

WEEDS - Season Seven Premiere
By Jean Tait
Three years have passed. Nancy Botwin is out of prison. Her family have created new lives for themselves in Copenhagen: Shane is a puppeteer (“They’re marionettes!”) and a ladies’ man; Silas is a bored model; Andy is a tour guide and activist; and Doug is a druggie (not everything can change!).

So how will they all adjust? Nancy’s life is no longer in danger, but she is confined to a halfway house in New York City for the duration of her sentence. Her boys are grown up. Do they need their mom anymore? Andy is still in love, but will Nancy be ready to commit to him? Will Nancy straighten up and fly right?

It sure doesn’t look like that in the first episode. In less than 30 minutes (for us, it’s about one day for her!)...
